Getting to Stur

Sturminster Marshall is an excellent centre for cycling - there are off-road tracks, quiet country lanes with a choice of flatter routes and challenging gradients.

Places to Visit in Sturminster Marshall:

St Mary's Church - a church has been here by the River Stour since Saxon times. This gives the village its name.

Rides List

Whitemill (OS ref ST958008) and the Bridge over the River Stour - has been photographed thousands of time, you can relax in the field next to the bridge and dip your feet if it's hot.  You can often see the pure white Little Egret (a small heron) which is now a breeding regular.  You can go around the water mill to see the restored machinery - click for more details.

Walnut Tree Field in Back Lane (OS ref ST950004) leads to the River Stour where you can relax and dip your feet if it's hot - but the river can be very deep after rain.

Mill Moor and Winterbourne stream - off Newton Road there is a tarmac bridleway leading to the river.  The ancient bridge is a historic listed structure.  The river is fed from chalk and flows through Winterbourne Houghton and many more Winterbourne villages (see Winterbournes ride).  It dries up in summer and floods in winter so it's worth a look any time and you may see kingfishers.
